Leuchtturm1917 Whitelines Link Notebook Review
I got a little excited when I read about this particular collaboration. Two prolific notebook companies joining to form the Leuchtturm1917 & Whitelines Link Notebook.
I actually found this video review by Dan Brown which cemented my desire to get one. Thanks Dan!
So off I went on my search for one at the best price (which I found here). It was a difficult search as I wanted the pocket (A6) sized dotted notebook. Not many places stock this book, yet.
A few days later it arrived and of course I ripped straight into it. It just so happens that this particular notebook I ordered was faulty, all the pages inside had been bound upside down. But I got straight onto the phone and spoke to a nice lady called Kate who sent me a replacement the very next day. Thanks Bureau Direct.
Anyway, as I was saying…
This notebook, being made by Leuchtturm (one of my favourite notebook producers) is of the highest quality. The cover feels great and the elastic strap is very secure. And Orange! Once you get inside you notice all the trademark Leuchtturm stickers and company bios are there, I love the stickers, the storage pocket at the back just feels well made and the page marker is lovely. Also orange! The paper is thick and smooth, it doesn’t really get much better IMO.
Now for the collaboration.
The new link books use the trademark whitelines on grey paper which have been specially adapted for use with its very own app! Available on both Android and iOS. The app works a little like the page scanner in evernote but the difference is the whitelines app will take the photo automatically. On each page there are 4 squares, one in each corner so the camera can recognize the boundaries of the page. Once the camera has found these (very quickly) it takes the photo, it also senses if the page is slightly ‘wonky’ and will adjust it for you. All the lines vanish leaving you with a white page and your content.
It also has fast sharing options, at the bottom of each page are three little ‘check boxes’, one for dropbox, one for evernote and one for email. By crossing one of these boxes you tell the app that’s where you want the captured page to be saved or sent. So if I want a page to be saved straight to my evernote account, I simply put a cross through the evernote box and off it goes. It works great too!
This book is not without its faults… unfortunately.
Because the pages are such good quality (80 GSM) the pages wont lie flat! This bugged me as I then had to hold the book while the camera focused on the page before snapping a pic. This often left a shadow towards the inner edge of the page rendering some of my writing unreadable.
Another issue I had is with the very thing that makes this book unique, and is the biggest problem this book has, for me anyway, is with the boxes in each corner which the camera app uses to detect the edges of the page. They restrict how much of the page you can actually use. Now I don’t know about you but I like to use pretty much the whole page when writing and sketching in my books. I can’t do that with this book, The space doesn’t even allow me to add my Bullet Journal calender system ‘Calendex‘ without seriously modifying it. The margins are just too big not giving me much space to write/draw in. If you look at the photo below you should see what I mean.
As well I often write thoughts, musings, to-dos, blog ideas… anything, when I climb in to bed which is usually in low light. As the lines are very feint, I find them very difficult to see. I have the eyesight of an eagle by the way.
That being said this is an excellent notebook. It’s just really not for me. I wanted to like this notebook so much too.
If you have bought one of these I’d love to hear about your experiences with it or different ways in which you use it.
